Updates:
5/8/2024 - Brown Street Lawn:
It's that time of year again!! The lawn was seeded on Wednesday May 5, 2024! Please be extra careful around the seedlings so we can have have a beautiful green lawn for the rest of the season! We expect the lawn area to be closed for about 4-6 weeks. Depending on its growth the time could change, but we appreciate your patience and are excited for a beautiful lawn! The playground and natural play area surround are only for children and their families, it is not intended for dog use of any kind. In fact, the wood chip berm was created to denote a separation of space between the lawn and playpen. We understand that with the closure of the lawn for reseeding, there are fewer options for our K9 friends. Currently, the best option is the grassy area at 22nd and Aspen.
Once the lawn has grown in we request for everyone to please tread lightly on the lawn with family, friends and dogs...especially after it rains. The moisture loosens the soil and makes the grass roots very easy to pull out. Dogs should always be on leash and curbed, no cleats allowed, and mind any rough play that could disturb the lawn in general, but especially after rain. If we can all work together we can help preserve the lawn for us all to enjoy all year long! Thank you!

Who is behind Gardens Abuzz? The Playful Learning Ambassadors who lead Gardens Abuzz programming in Corinthian Gardens (part of FESPP - The Friends of Eastern State Penitentiary Park) are brought to you by KABOOM!, funded by The William Penn Foundation and the Knight Foundation, with training support provided by FabYouthPhilly and Playful Learning Landscape Action Network. Yes, that’s a lot of people and organizations! But we share the common goal of working to improve our community.
PLAYFUL LEARNING is play that is guided by an adult or the environment, with a specific learning goal or goals as its focus.
It’s “Play + Learning Goal.” Planned, playful environments offer richer opportunities for both play and learning in a space.
FESPP hosts several community events during the year including the Treecycle event in January, Breakout 5K race in the fall, and Urban Beach Party in the summer to name a few.
